4. Identify specific risk factors for suicide in patients with substance use disorders
5. Learn strategies for managing suicidal risk in patients with substance use disorders
Synopsis
More than 30% of patients with substance use disorders experience co-occurring disorders. Patients with co-morbid psychiatric diagnoses have between 3 to 12 times the risk of relapse compared with patients with substance abuse disorders alone. Patients with alcohol and drug dependency exhibit suicide rates comparable to major psychiatric disorders such as Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia. The relationship of suicidal behavior to the temporal course of substance dependency has received increased attention and specific strategies for evaluating and managing this risk will be discussed.
